Richards doesn't count in this equation. He is not worth half his contract, there are players on this team that make less than that who would do better than him on the 3rd or 4th line.
Heading back the other way would be a cheap two way contract.
We are relieving them of a $30m albatross, giving them another shot at a cup (likely at our expense) before FA ruins their team this summer.

There are few teams with cap space who actually intend to spend up to the cap.
There are few options to those teams who need to shed space.
The Flames' cap space is worth a pile of assets.
LA can give it one more go with this group of players but recognizes they have to fill the Voyonov hole to do it. They can't fill that hole without salary relief.
The Flame will squeeze every ounce out of LA, and if that isn't enough, the Flames have 15 other teams to do the same thing to.
