Calgary were apparently closely linked to Arizona and Carolina in deals this summer. The liability on a buyout for Ribeiro was 1.9 or 2 million dollars per year for I believe 6 years.
The cost to take on that liability was a 12th overall draft pick. Rumours about why the deal didn't go down are just rumours, but the most credible reasons seems to believe Ribeiro wouldn't authorize a trade.
I'm not sure if the motivation for trading for Ribeiro was to buy him out, or to play him, but the liability question is largely the same.
The Calgary Flames thought taking on Ribeiro and more than 10 million dollars in salary liability was worth roughly a top 10 pick.
Richards is in a similar situation, so I would suggest Calgary's offer is in that ballpark: Value equivalent to a top 10 pick in a good draft year.
Is Tofoli equivalent value to a top 10 pick? Is he more valuable? Less?
