Then the Flames walk, there are very few teams in this league with the cap space/budget to even think about taking on that albatross of a contract. LA is dealing from a position of extreme weakness here not in the position to dictate terms or the Flames just let them eat the contract which is almost 10% of their cap space.
As I see it, Richards right now is a 1 mil a year player, if LA wants us to take that contract they need to add value that's equal to 4.75 mil a year over 5 years either through taking back bad contracts of our own or through adding top end cost controlled players.
A mid level prospect or bottom of the lineup type guy isn't going to do it and certainly not with quality like Jooris or Backlund being sent back.
If LA doesn't like it then they can choke on that contract out of contention. I'm fine with that.
If Calgary is going to take on that contract it, the trade needs to make Calgary substantially better not just be a even trade.
