David Bustyn - scout for McKeen's Hockey
TSN 1260 - Jan 17
https://soundcloud.com/pipeline-show...-burstyn-jan17
C Mitch Marner - 5'11'' 163lbs - shoots R
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=223194- no concerns about his size - his brother is 6'2''.
- has grown 5 inches since he started in the OHL
- guys like Hudler and Eberle show you can be 5'10'' or 5'11'' with an excellent skill package and still be NHLers
- everytime you look at the boxscore and don't see Marner have a 3 points you think he had a bad night - puts 4 or 5 points consistently
- highly cerebal, patient, puck possession style player
- makes and excutes plays at a high rate of speed
- Flaming: Marner was the most impressive Knight at the Memorial cup last year. Horvat was quiet, Domi was dissapointing
- was really good at the Ivan Hlinka and that springboarded his meteroic rise in the rankings
- all 30 NHL teams want to get a read on him
- McKeen's has him ranked at #4 behind McDavid, Eichel and Hanifin
On whether WJC changed opinions on McDavid, Eichel and/or Hanifin- thought Hanifin struggled a little bit - first time playing at that tournament
- whole USA blue line was young, so maybe thrust into some situations that could of used more experience/leadership
- Eichel had a hot start but the US faded
- McDavid started off slow coming off injury and when it mattered most he picked up his game
- McDavid has the same "superstar it quality" that Perry and Weber has
- McDavid's stride is the most explosive Burstyn has ever seen since he started scouting
- the stride will enable McDavid to put up more than a point per game numbers [in the NHL]
- whichever team gets McDavid will see their fortunes turn around quicker than expected
- no doubt McDavid will be a NHL star
LW Lawson Crouse - 6'4'' 212lbs - shoots L
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=205155- Crouse ranked #5 by McKeen's.
- Crouse is a powerforward with very good hockey iq in all 3 zones - reason why Team Canada took him to the WJC
- very versatile - he can play with better players or can play on the bottom portion of your depth chart and can still produce
- just a big body that can command the boards down low, cycles the puck, and can make plays
- only going to get thicker and stronger
- scary to think how much better he can become
- has become the cornorstone of the Kingston rebuild
C Dylan Strome - 6'3'' 187lbs - Shoots L
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=228107- Strome ranked #6
- compares Strome to a Joe Thornton-esque type player - crafty skilled playmaker
- still needs to work on his skating
- more of an offensive guy
- doesn't really play with physical jam
- also doesn't play with a lot of pace - main concern with him at the NHL level
- at junior he can pick apart defences but with the pace of the NHL....
- still ranked high because he can manufacture offense - better than his brother (Ryan ) at the same age
- Strome will be a point producer in the NHL but McDavid, Eichel, Hanifin, Marner and Crouse offer a little more in 3 or 4 years time in the NHL
- Draisaitl is a little more thicker and stronger on the puck than Strome - but both very cerebal type players, make plays and suck defences to them. extra heightened hockey sense.
D Zach Werenski - 6'2'' 214lbs - Shoots L
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=186311- reminds of Keith Yandle
- a player that does everything well - no real glaring deficiencies
- very safe pick
- had a very good WJC
- big body 6'2'' 200lbs
- skates well
- good hard shot
- Jack of all trades at the NHL level
C Nick Merkley - 5'10'' 186lbs - Shoots R
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=107894- has gone ahead of Barzal partially because Barzal has missed time with injury
- very dynamic player - always moving and buzzing
- not afraid even though he is a little undersized
- unbelievable hands - top 3 in this draft just based on hands and what he can do with the puck
- always moving his feet in the offensive zone and comes back to the defensive zone
- if you can put the size aside he has the ability to go further up the rankings
on who he is looking forward to seeing at CHL top prospects game- D Jeremy Roy - a Letang type defenceman
- RW Evgeny Svechnikov - really lighting it up for Cape Breton
- LW Paul Bitner
- LW Jake Debrusk - most excited to see. smart hockey player that oozes potential
