Well, you don't outright say to Karri that he's a backup. He knows as well as anyone that if he wins, he plays again and if Ortio loses he plays. He's been given that opportunity to play when he's won and when another goalie has lost. Even if Ortio is looking good, it's not like he's going to go undefeated or be given the #1 spot on a silver platter by Hartley. Unless we make the playoffs and Hartley switches to a playoff-coaching mode and sticks with one guy.
I do think Ramo will test the market, but I think if we do trade away Hiller, it's a sign of confidence in him that won't go un-noticed - especially since it was Feaster that brought him in and Treliving that brought Hiller in.

Money isn't an issue for the Flames so I don't really think salaries come into play.

I agree that money isn't an issue, but if Ortio is the real deal, then it doesn't hurt to have less cap hit on the backup. Plus we might be able to resign ramo for ~3Y term at a discount, which would be some good stability as we transition to paying all the forwards big extension money. Flames know Ramo better than anyone in the league so they can also be most or least comfy signing him to a longer term.
