The day and age of the specialized war plane is pretty much over.
also conventional theory is that the A-10 which was designed as a tank buster had to get too close to the battlefield to be effective, the idea being that its better to stand off and hit a enemy formation from the edge of a combat area.
Also while the A-10 is heavily armored and armed, the 30 mm rotary cannon alone is like the death star of the battle field, it wouldn't survive very well against the next generation of fighters and SAMS.
Personally I love the A-10. It was designed to fly between rocks, light up a enemy tank formation with its 30mm gun and be able to take massive amounts of damage.
But in the modern battlefield its day is coming to an end. But against a group like ISIS its a very effective weapon.
