Police dogs are specifically trained to engage the aggressive forearm of an individual in order to render any knife or gun wielding arm useless against the officer.

Having said that, I belong to a law enforcement forum with largely US posters. The actions of these officers were widely condemned by current LEOs and the use of the dog were one of numerous tactical errors by Albuquerque Police.

As a peace officer in training, I am also glad they were charged.
