Also, most teams (and the Flames definitely fall into this category) believe that treating players well is the right thing to do, and will pay dividends over time.
Shore deserves a chance, but doesn't fit into Florida's plans. So they looked to send him somewhere where he would get a chance (they did the right thing). Fortunately for the Flames, that was going to be in the western conference.
Also, as someone astutely observed earlier, the Flames took the high road by sending Florida a 4th for Knight, instead of just waiting to grab him for free. It seems pretty likely to me, that that played into Florida being willing to deal with the Flames again here.
GMs are a small, tight community. Dealing honourably and fairly keeps doors and phone line open. Sometimes, you reap what you've sown.
