I'm not sure when your friends were here, but I would definitely not say that the cost of living in Alberta ( and particularly Calgary) is low by any means...especially when it comes to housing (and especially when you compare it to a place like Montreal which probably has the cheapest big-city rent in Canada). Apart from the low taxes, I find most things in Calgary, whether it be restaurants/bars, services, parking, groceries etc., to be quite expensive.
