Default Desktop Power Supplies

Had a nasty incident with my gaming rig last night. Logged into World of Tanks, entered a match and suddenly my screen goes dark. Then computer basically shuts down. Sat there staring at it wondering WTF and the POP!! sounded like someone shot off a capgun in my rig.

HOPING it's just the PSU. I recently replaced all other components and this was a left over. More than capable power supply, I generally spend some money on them but it was getting old, it had to be around 5 yrs of age.

So looking around at new units and I'm intrigued by these new modular PSU's. Anyone have experience with them? Any reason to stay away? I see ME has an 850w CoolerMaster that seems to be very well reviewed for a decent price. I have a full sized CoolerMaster case so sometimes I have a bit of an issue getting power cables to the HD's and optical drive so I need something with generous cable length.
