He was standing away from the boards, probably expected a possible pass back to him. Unfortunately, instead of it coming straight back to him the angle Wideman shot it off the boards was short. Maybe Wideman should have stayed back at the blueline instead of being up so high on the play, maybe the refs should have blown it down when Canuck player touched it enough to get credit for goal. All sorts of actions contributed to it being a messed up play.
Also, one of the first things I learned playing hockey is the puck travels faster then a person can skate, so by the time the Flame players turned around and realized it was heading to the net none of them was going to catch up to it
