You can think that's stupid all you want, but that shooting when the Dark Knight opened did effect the opening weekend for that movie with some people electing to stay away.

If the release of the Interview went through amidst threats to theatres (no matter how real or hollow those threats are) attendance over the holidays would drop.

That is one of the busiest times of year for the box office, and 2014 is already one of the worst years for ticket sales in nearly a decade.

Easy to say the theatres are in the wrong for refusing to play this movie, but at the end of the day they don't want to see their numbers suffer at a vital time of year in what's already been a dismal year.

It was an easy decision for them to make.
Historically Hollywood and corporations have had way more backbone than this and it sets a pathetic precedence. It really shows that they really only care about liability and the bottom line.

George RR Martin has a good take on this.

The level of corporate cowardice here astonishes me. It's a good thing these guys weren't around when Charlie Chaplin made THE GREAT DICTATOR. If Kim Jong-Un scares them, Adolf Hitler would have had them ####ting in their smallclothes
