After drafting Erixon in the 2009 draft, the Flames had two years to sign him or he would fall back to the draft.
After drafting Erixon, his stock kept going up including to be considered a top 10 draft pick if the 2009 draft was re-done.
He kept reassuring the Flames he would go sign with them and an IIHF rule prevented the Flames from signing him earlier because he was playing in the world championships.
After the world championships he did a complete 180 and said that he felt he wouldn't get a chance in the NHL with the Flames and wouldn't sign.
And with some suggestions of tampering his father's former NHL team (Rangers) was the one that never stopped calling the Flames in attempts to trade for him.
