In regards to defense, I feel it's less about playing time, and more about the quality of opponents you face, play with and situations you are put in.
Do we want Wotherspoon playing against NHL guys? Do we want Wotherspoon getting the top notch match ups in the AHL to defend against, or 3rd pairing assignments in the NHL? Do we want to expose Wotherspoon on a road trip to the home coach being able to exploit last change and get match ups against him we'd rather not have. Do we want him getting PP or PK time in the AHL, or riding the pine in those situations in the NHL?
Not really about ice time, about ice quality and level IMO. I have no idea for the record what's right for him at this point, but I trust the Flames to make the call when it is.
