If you're going to have some enforcers, or at least some rough and tumble players, you need to have at least a decent penalty kill. Until we can get in the top half of the league the mandate from the coaches is likely "do not take a penalty unless you absolutely are saving a goal against".
That means the Flames have no role for McGrattan or Bollig to play, hence their frequent scratches, and Engelland's role is going to disappear at some point because he simply can't play a strong enough defensive game.
