I find I haven't really gotten a material Xmas gift I was really excited about in years. Probably since I was a kid.
I'm at the point in my life where the stuff I really need or want tends to be either work-related, highly specialized or expensive (or a combo of all). I don't need or want any useless trinkets, more sweaters or random chinese-made junk. But since it's not realistic to ask for a $2k camera lens, or a specific vintage watch, or a trip to a racing-school, I try to ask for experiences instead....a nice meal, a hockey game, or a quick day/weekend trip. I'd honestly prefer to just have a nice dinner with family, watch my daughter enjoy her presents, and that's more than enough.
But in general, I've found that the material goods in my life that made me the most happy where self-bought. My watch, my car, my camera gear, my trip to the Galapagos...thanks me!
