It was controversial at the time and who knows what other deals could have been had but THAT was a bold move... Now, years later, looking at phaneuf with the leafs it feels like it was a good deal just to remove him from the core of the organization. You can see the same thing from guys like hall, eberle, yakupov, Shultz, etc. in Edmonton but they don't have the guts to do what EVERYONE knows should be done.

The Phaneuf trade still looks awful, not because Phaneuf was a great player, but the return was a marginal return that did little to nothing to benefit the team. A bold move that isn't adventitious to the long term prospects of the team, in particular a team that prides itself on the rebuilding of the team isn't a good trade. It isn't as though the Phaneuf trade has propelled the Flames to new heights. They sucked with Phaneuf and they sucked without him as well.
I don't think that the Oilers should make massive trades right now, the season is already done and making a trade now would reek of desperation and knowing that the return would be awful.
