Speaking of advanced stats, hockeystats.ca added a (big, ugly) table that shows head to head Corsi for all players in the game. A neat look at how well one player did individually when on the ice with a specific opponent or teammate...

It helps give an idea of where and how we're getting our heads beat in.

For instance last night, in all situations the Coyotes had 67 shot attempts to our 46. +21 on Corsi.

Consider the Corsi for our defencemen overall:
Brodie was +2
Giordano was -1
Russell -7
Wideman -7
Smid -15
Engelland -16

So our third pair got its ass handed to it. Anyone shocked? Me neither. (Russell and Wideman were the pairing most used on defensive zone draws - both had zone starts of 28%).

The individual stats are fun though.

I thought Hanzal - when he wasn't whining, acting fake tough or boarding Wideman - was the best player on the ice for Arizona. His individual Corsi (all situations) against each of our defencemen:
vs. Engelland: +10
vs. Smid: +8
vs. Wideman: +5
vs. Russell: +5
vs. Gioradno: -3
vs. Brodie: -7

The numbers generally hold for Erat and Gagner. This suggests a couple of conclusions. First, the obvious:
1. Phoenix's top line destroyed our third pairing on defence.
2. Jesus Christ are Gio and Brodie ever good!

The interesting one to me though is that Engellend and Smid largely held their own against everyone else. In general, when they got away from that top line, they weren't a liability. In this case, it helps that the Coyotes are a bad hockey team. Stop their first line and you stop them.

Also, you may be interested to learn that we blocked a crazy number of shots last night. Looks like we were at 26 blocks.
