This was a little convoluted... I think history of the season goes that Iginla didn't want to talk contract until the end of the season. As the season went out and we were on the outside looking in (re: playoffs), he did the ROR offer sheet..... when that failed, Iginla wanted to see where things were at, "lets see where we (Flames) are next week" as he really wanted to get it done with the Flames. There was one source (OJ?) that stated he was connected to ownership, and ownership was shocked that Iginla may not plan on re-signing with the Flames.... as playoffs faded away, Iginla realized we weren't going to make the playoffs that year and gave Feaster a team of 4 teams to be traded to. The rest, well we know what happened.
As for the "team" that is build right now.... this is how I would give credit, naming only notable players:
Feaster -
Hartley, Hudler (best additions),
Byron
Darryl -
Glencross, possibly
Giordano
Treliving -
Hiller
Tod Button, Tom Webster, and development staff (Troy Ward, Huska through to Playfair) -
Giordano, Brodie, Backlund, Gaudreau, Granlund, Jooris, Bouma, Ferland, Poirer, Wotherspoon....et al
* Monahan was a bit of a no brainer, but I guess you could give Feaster credit for that since if we didn't suck so bad, we wouldn't have a good draft pick
So....... If you are going to give credit to anyone for building this team, its Tod Button, his scouting staff and the development staff
