I know they have to move the storylines along but this season in particularly, they have done a very poor job developing the antagonists.

They've been introduced very quickly and just as hastily dispatched. Their backgrounds aren't explained enough for us to really understand their motives or develop any feelings toward them one way or another (other than some disgusts at the cannibals for obvious reasons).
