I am looking to get a new pair of headphones for a friend and not sure what is best.

Ideally looking for a quality pair that can be used for travel and recreation. Noise cancelling would be great. I think over-the-ear would be best as he doesn't need a sports pair.

I checked out the selection at Best Buy and was a bit overwhelmed at the selection available.

The Bose demo pair are awesome but not sure I can stomach paying $300 for a pair.

Does anyone own a pair of Bose headphones and if so, are you satisfied with them? Is it really necessary to spend that much to get high quality headphones? And what about Monster? I see them everywhere - are they better than Bose?
