Truly dislike the idea of people telling athletes they should take way less than they deserve to go play for a winner.

Sure he's made a boatload of money over his career. He's also used to living a certain lifestyle and in a few years his earnings potential becomes tiny compared to it is now. I doubt he's out buying a new Ferrari every two weeks when he gets a paycheck. He can set-up his family for generations. Why not make the most of it since its highly likely he's going to be the only person in his family tree to ever have the chance to earn money like this.

Athletes are the only people who get this treatment.
