In recent years, a number of Canadian post-secondary institutions, including the universities of Alberta, Regina and Victoria, have introduced multi-stall, gender-inclusive restrooms and online maps for transgender students in a bid to shield them from harassment for choosing between a male or female washroom.

On Friday, the U of C joined that list when school officials approved a proposal by the Students’ Union to transform an existing men’s washroom in the MacEwan Student Centre for its queer, transgender and non-binary gender expressing students and faculty.

Susan Barker, U of C vice-provost of student experience, said approving the pilot project signals to the university’s LGBTQ community that their rights and basic needs are valued and addressed appropriately.

Good on them, another step in the right (or rather left) direction.
