By my rudimentary and incomplete guesstimates, a trade to Edmonton from Carolina could net Eric Staal an extra 2 - 4 million dollars on his existing contract.
That's a bit of incentive to at least consider it.

However, consider this:
Eric Stall, as of capgeek, has career earnings of $63,932,400.
Even if his tax savings on this contract was $4M, I'd wager that hed sacrifice 6% of his total career earnings to not go to Edmonton.
You have a good point that theres a reason for him to consider it, I just dont think that the tax savings is compelling enough.
