The Bruins are built around a culture and a way of playing. Having a guy like Seguin as the centrepiece of the team does not fit that culture. And Seguin is piling up the points, but I don't see the Stars as anything close to a contender. The guy still doesn't know how to play two-way hockey.
The reason the Bruins are declining is because Chara is getting old. The return for the Seguin trade only looks bad because Eriksson, who had been remarkably healthy and consistent in his tenure with the Stars, ran into serious injury problems with the Bruins.

What we have seen with the Bruins and Penguins isn't much different than what happened in Vancouver although to a lesser degree in that once they get to the top of the league critical mistakes have been made that has added flaws to what were once sure fire cup contenders. It just goes to show that it takes a lot of time and work to build a cup contender but only a few bad moves to easily undo all those years of work.

The problem is that managing the cap with an elite team is extremely difficult. And to some extent, you have to go for it when you have that window of opportunity, even if it means decline after the window closes. The teams that have managed to sustain elite caliber play for multiple seasons (the Hawks and Kings) are the exception.
