I think one of the mistakes WR made was assuming the support they received over the last year was real. Personally I think the polls were showing more disapproval of Alison Redford than they were support of Wildrose.
And I don't think the part was going anywhere with Smith at the helm. She simply rubbed too many people the wrong way and did not seem capable of being a true leader or addressing huge issues within the party. That was shown during the last election campaign as well as during their latest convention in Red Deer. She never even showed up for the vote at their latest convention.
