Yeah, since the start it's sounded like a sports hernia. The hernia itself is a hole in the abdominal wall torn or otherwise, which can be painful (in addition to plenty of other issues) but the hole never exactly fixes itself. It can become less inflamed and painful, but never closes on its own. Reason to do surgery during a season would be if debilitating pain persists, or other issues related to herniating contents arise. Probably a good thing ultimately that he got surgery if it is indeed a hernia repair, as the surgery has a pretty good success rate and persistent debilitating symptoms are rare. However (again, speculating if that's actually what this is, although I like my odds) it means we won't see him for at LEAST 8 weeks post-op.
