One thing he has to learn is to avoid impingement. The shoulder is incredibly easy to injure because it's so easy to cause an impingement injury, easier than most people can imagine. Shoulder presses, upright rows, bench press or even pushups can injure the shoulders. Hopefully there is a good doctor working with him that teaches him how easy it is to cause damage to the shoulder. Most shoulder injuries are impingement related and if there is a trauma impingement usually exacerbates it to the point of requiring surgery.
