I hope people don't think this is oblivious to the MLS or to the Flames ownership group, because it's not. We may not be top of the list of short-term MLS destinations, but I am confident that we're really not as 'far down' as others are suggesting. Personally, I could see something happening within the next decade or two.
A new, soccer-friendly stadium would certainly be part of the missing link. It would allow Calgary to sustain a lower division team, which I still believe to be an important precursor to MLS. And it would also allow us to host larger, one-off soccer events. We can't do that right now with McMahon because a) it a poor place to watch soccer, and b) it is always covered with permanent, bright football lines, which is a big no-no for proper soccer events, particularly if televised. And they're not going to install a more versatile turf without the prospect of more than just the CFL and CIS football.

I still think that the MLS is a long shot, but it is an even longer shot (read: impossibility) with our existing facilities.
