Playing defense in the NHL is an acquired skill and I have no doubt the Flames - and Giordano - could make him a player.
He is not a good NHL defenseman yet, but he has shown that he can be in the future, with some coaching.
He is almost as close to being a regular NHLer as Wotherspoon is (though Wotherspoon is a much smarter player).
Getting a prospect like him, in exchange for one of our forward prospects, would be help balance out our prospect base.

Fair enough.
I haven't seen anything that indicates that he could be a NHL defenseman in the future but trading a likely to not make it forward for a likey to not make it defenseman is a good idea. With the prospect base we have better to get a few more defensemen to take a chance on developing.
