I don't think there is any reason to think that the team was unsure of Hartley. Treliving was just doing his due diligence as being the new boss. Brian Burke said himself before he hired a new GM that the he was going to encourage the new GM to consider keeping and re-signing Hartley. That was a pretty big endorsement from the team I think.
