Can someone explain to me the expandable storage?

I know it comes with 16GB built in, and is expandable up to 128GB.

So does that mean I can plug an SD card up to 112 so that the total is 128GB (16 + 112 = 128)?

Or is it 16GB, on board, plus up to 128GB for a total of 144GB?
