It's not that hard to get guys to cross north of the border it is hard to get top UFA's to join losing teams especially when you won't give out deals for more than 5 years. The Jays had the pick of the litter in 92 and 93 when they were winning. It is the lack of wins and lack of 5+ year deals that hirt the Jays more than anything.
As for not using money to fill glaring holes. There are LFers Melky, Cruz, Markakis out there that fill and need and 0 reason to think any of them wouldn't come to Toronto for the right money.
Yes it is easier to say fill 2nd base with a quality guy on the internet than from AA's spot but I think overpaying Martin when there is a capable guy at that spot and major issues on the team in other areas certainly makes sense.
