Living on a farm and having a feral cat that you feed so it sticks around is a little different than chaining a cat in your garage and living in the city.
It would attempt to escape because its imprisoned in your garage.
I can open my front door, take out the garbage and come back and my cats will be more than 5 ft back from the door sitting happily.
