They are not humans, they are animals, they get the crappy end of the stick. I'm not spending 2000 on a dog that is half brain dead when my kids need winter clothes. And if a cat won't stop peeing on my kids bed, see ya!
People who treat their animals better than other human beings make me lose faith in humanity more than someone who euthanizes an animal for less than perfect reasons.
And please don't confuse me as someone who gets a pet cause they are cute and just needles them when they lose the cute factor. But the guilt trip I got taking my dog in made me want to tell the vet to stuff it.

Don't feel bad about yourself. The white knights will obviously be super vocal in a thread like this, but most people would have a very low tolerance level for a pet that was making their life difficult, ruining their property, etc. Most normal people don't get a pet with the thought that they'll keep it its entire life no matter what.
Have you ever been in a house where they had an incontinent animal? It smells foul and I just imagine there are germs everywhere. I had a buddy buy one of these houses and they had to rip out the sub floor - changing the carpet and underlay wasn't sufficient to remove the odor. The former owner of the house who let their cat piss everywhere was a complete effing nut. I base that opinion on nothing other than the fact that she let this cat go to the bathroom in her house, on the floor (and presumably the furniture), for an extended period of time.
Pets can enrich your life, but if they start taking from you more than they give (in terms of companionship, motivation to walk, love, whatever), you're not a terrible person to look for other alternatives. Ideally, you will re-home it. Failing that, and if they are causing you financial or emotional stress, then the SPCA is a good, last-ditch option.
There are way more animals out there than people who want them. If you provide a good home for a nice chunk of the animal's life, then you've done more for it than a lot of pets get. I think you should feel good about all that you gave those animals.
