I think the historical trend here appears to be that once the cat's grow past the kitten stage they lose their appeal and thus appear to suffer from the effects of neglect and lack of stimulation. Correct?
The obvious solution this time around would be to get two cats. That way they can keep each other stimulated when they become boring thus negating the aforementioned effects. Three would be even better.
