No, that's not it. At least not for me, anyways. Like I said above in an earlier post, there is a way that Fleury could have answered the question—whatever it was—honestly and diplomatically without making the topic all about what a great player he was, and how little credit he gets for it. There is a big difference between "being honest" and "just telling it like it is" and being an egotistical blowhard. Too often when Fleury speaks one is left with the impression that it is self-serving attention-getting more than informative or even nostalgic. This is no exception, and it really isn't good public behaviour.
I understand that there are reasons behind why Fleury will say what he does, and why he thinks what he does. But those reasons do not excuse his comments for too frequently being tactless and narcissistic. I don't have to like it, and I don't have to excuse his distasteful public persona on account of his past personal tragedies. As much as a number of posters have rightly chided others for dredging up Fleury's past issues as part of their criticisms, so too I would say that we shouldn't be using his miserable history as an excuse for every time he makes the conscious choice to say inappropriate or off-putting things in public.
