From a privacy perspective this reminds me of when wireless routers were still relatively new, and straight from the box required no password be set up.

Heck in my leaner days I had no home internet and simply relied on my neighbours open wifi-networks to get by.

I suspect with enough media attention the manufacturers start requiring a password on these.
