“Sven is the same guy every day and likes to compete and get after it,” said Ward. “You can tell he has some special gifts, but he’s always upbeat and looks forward to practice and has a lot of respect for the game. I said I’ll be hard on him and he said he wants nothing but hard.

“He handles himself beyond his years and is a little old school.”

“We were going to get a quality guy who’s willing work,” recalled Johnston, a former Vancouver Canucks assistant coach. “His habits are exceptional and after practice he worked on having pucks passed to him at full speed and he’d try to pick them off his stick and feet — all the little tricks — over and over again. It reminded me of Paul Kariya. Right from Day 1, he loved to be on the ice.

“He’s not cocky, but he’s confident and humble enough to know that he’s got to work. Sometimes, he challenges guys head-to-head a little too often but his all-round game is solid. And he has the mental skill to handle the ups and downs. He doesn’t let things bother him.”
