Larsson may not be panning out so far as a top pair D, but he has ability and potential, he is not going to get traded away for AHL depth. Hanowski et al. may top out as middle 6 forwards, but even if Larsson "just" becomes a #4D, he is more valuable. Argubaly even a good bottom pairing D is worth a lot in this market for defencemen. The second would be the big piece of that trade, unless New Jersey is super high on one of these players
Baertschi for Larsson is a classic "change of scenery" trade, could work out well for both players and both teams.
Trading from organizational depth to address a need, moving out a guy who whilst he has been passed on the depth chart, is still a legitimate prospect. It is the only scenario a team in the Flames' stage of a rebuild should consider with a prospect
I would not have a problem if the Flames pulled the trigger on that deal. From the team's perspective, he is behind Gaudreau and you have a guy in Klimchuk who can also grow into that spot, and D is a much bigger need in the prospect pool and the NHL roster right now.

It's obviously a pipe dream to offer a lesser prospect than Baertschi for Larsson.
