Still it is a bad idea, lots of examples in recent years of teams that have strong regular season and maybe even playoff performance that become lottery teams in the following year(s).

And any stud top 3 defenceman that you get at the trade deadline for a late 1st round pick is likely past their prime and/or a pending UFA.
