To put it in perspective: The Flames had a 15.7 PP% last year. An increase in 5% would add 16 goals on the year and move the Flames GF from 202 to 218 and their GF/G from 2.46 (23rd) to 2.66 (16th). It changes an offense from poor to at least average. It makes a huge difference over the course of a season in wins and losses and can push the team up the standings.
Special teams are an important part of any successful team. Currently the Flames are top 10 in GF/GA, and a good power play can supplement a team that can prevent well and score more often than the opposition 5 on 5. That is a winning formula so long as the PK isn't bottom 5. Unfortunately, the PK IS currently bottom 5 for the Flames, so it's holding back their overall success.
