At the end of the day it is about asset management (something the oilers know little about). Flames traded a player that was being bumped down our depth charts (Ortio passed him and Gillies was in coming down the pipe). What they don't understand is this was a trade from a position of strength because we successfully developed (another concept foreign to the oilers) players.

The argument though was basically that we got saddled with three more years at 3.5M of a terrible defenseman. He's right to some extent, as that's too much for laddy (even though that was "a hometown discount" according to Willis himself just before the article). The thing is though, it doesn't matter to the flames as we have the space. In fact, one could argue that the Flames were better off with the higher cap hit to reach the floor
