Although it's not my intention to Sliver the thread here, if I was in Flames management I'd definitely value my male fans more than female, because there's more of them. (Anecdotally invalid evidence ahead) Of guys I know, almost everyone loves hockey, and of women, maybe half. When I go to a game, it's around two thirds guys in attendance. When I watch on TV, the majority of ads are clearly aimed at men, for manly stuff like greasy burgers, trucks, and sprays designed to minimize or mask dude-stank.
Pretty well all professional team sports are the same - played by men, watched by men more than women. I doubt that will ever change unless women's team sports become as popular as men's. A young girl might idolize a player, but a young boy can (however unrealistically) dream of BEING that player, which has a far more profound appeal.
