That still would not make the Star liable. The defamation you are assuming would have originated elsewhere. Jian is a public figure and given he's made this a public issue himself, the Star's actions certainly are fair comment in the public interest.
While the Star chose not to publish the allegations initially, it is Jian's own PR offensive that gave them the green light. Particularly given the Star is claiming he misrepresented their initial hesitance to publish. He doesn't get to make this a public debate by arguing his side then cry foul when the media presents the other side of the story.
