Gun laws only affect those that go through the legal process of obtaining the firearms. If this guy was a criminal or had involvement in criminal activity, he would obtain firearms from criminal sources.

I wish people would get this. I think our gun laws are entirely reasonable and only wish the educational process involving owning and using firearms would be promoted a lot more, but lets not get all 1984 by self imposing a totalitarian state because of one incident. The US has clearly shown that it won't change a damn thing in the end.
