One of the best ways to make sure that tragedies involving firearms don't happen again is to restrict access to firearms by strengthening gun laws. While you're right that gun laws in America have absolutely no bearing on what happened in Ottawa, it's totally reasonable to ask the question "in light of these events, should weapons restrictions in Canada be increased."

I mean, here was an individual who was under police scrutiny, had a criminal record, and had their passport revoked, yet they were able to acquire a weapon from somewhere. It's totally, totally appropriate to ask if this was a failure of our weapons laws and if they should be strengthened.
