If you're building, there isn't much cost involved in terms of prep that would be different than a gas fireplace. And even then 99% of the time "code" for any fireplace just refers to follow the installation guidance from manufacturer. So just find a nice looking wood burner (and as mentioned, go for a sealed unit, not an open "masonary" fireplace, there is a reason no one installs them anymore) and find the online installation instructions PDF and you'll be able to see what type of clearances, materials, etc, you'll need to keep in mind in the install.
