Perhaps where things went wrong for Phaneuf was right from the start when they kept him up with the Flames in his first year. Don't think so. Phaneuf was being mentored by Roman Hamrlik and they were a pretty good combo. Phaneuf learned a lot from Hamrlik.
Hamrlik was traded the next year and then Phaneuf basically had all the weight on his shoulders.
He needed another year or two of mentoring by an established defenseman.
Plus, Phaneuf has a pretty big ego...one that gets in his way sometimes.
