Ladies and Gentlemen, the many faces of Jay Bouwmeester
The Flames are fresh off a gutsy 3rd period effort against a discombobulated Oilers squad, scoring 3 to take a 5-2 win. Mason Raymond's hat trick and Joe Colborne's 3 assist night were overshadowed by a poor team performance through 2 periods forcing Karri Ramo to play lights out to keep the team in it, ending up with 38 saves in the win.
The Blues are stinging after a late bad bounce off a stanchion led to a game winning goal by Nash with less than 2 minutes to play. The Blues had a couple early season defensive lapses in an otherwise strong game, and Elliott was average though his numbers look much worse than that. However, Schwartz and Tarasenko had strong games, and Stastny scored a goal in his first game as a Blue, so the offense is as advertised so far.
The Blues dominated the season series last year, going 2-0-1 against the Flames, and they've improved their lineup so don't expect that to record to get much better this year. However, Elliott seems to be the weak link in a team that is likely destined for the playoffs. The Flames will have to shoot often and from every angle to get the Blues out of their precision defensive positioning and Elliott moving laterally. Even then, Elliott has been known for the odd weak goal.
It's possible that Gaudreau will sit as a healthy scratch tonight for two reasons: 1) to get him a bit of time watching the flow of the game from up top and 2) to allow Setoguchi some game time to see what he can offer. You can guarantee McGrattan will draw back in against the rough and tumble Blues. Also, Stastny suffered a quad contusion against the Rangers and is a game time decision, along with Patrick Berglund, but both are likely to play. Don't be shocked to see backup Jake Allen, who is more than capable, in net against a weaker offensive opponent in the Flames.
